What
is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics can be defined as the study and design of products,
workplaces, processes and systems to match the strengths and
weaknesses of people, in such a way as to minimise costs and
errors, and to maximise user satisfaction and health. Ergonomics
subsumes what used to be known as "Work Study" into a
more science based subject, and it also includes the psychological
dimensions relevant to workplaces and work systems. It has a very
broad spread of input and application so is multidisciplinary and
interdisciplinary, which endow it with many strengths but also
particular difficulties.
The importance and relevance of Ergonomics both within and
outside Ireland is increasing, with the present day emphasis on
such issues as product usability, musculoskeletal injuries, and
complex system failures which result in serious accidents like the
Chernobyl disaster. It is necessary and desirable that Irish
industry and Irish products will become well known for their good
ergonomics.
